Healthcare Professionals
Healthcare professionals are a vital part of a healthy Louisiana. Together, we can help Louisianans be smoke-free. Research suggests that patients receiving counseling combined with pharmacotherapy are four times more likely to successfully quit.

Start with the 5 A’s:
•Ask. Identify tobacco users at every visit.
•Advise. Talk with the patients about tobacco use and urge them to quit.
•Assess. Determine if the patient is willing to make a quit attempt at this time.
•Assist. Prescribe a medication unless contraindications exist.
•Arrange. Arrange follow-up, including Fax-to-Quit Louisiana.

The Louisiana Smoke-Free Air Act (Act 815)
The Louisiana Smoke-Free Air Act, prohibits smoking in most public places and workplaces, including all restaurants with or without attached bars. Smoking will still be allowed in stand-alone bars and casinos. Prisons will be smoke-free by August 15, 2009.

Local communities are free to strengthen the Act with stricter local ordinances.

School campuses are tobacco-free, but schools may become a 100% Tobacco-Free School by setting higher standards for their students.

With the passage of Act 838, it is also illegal to smoke in vehicles when children are present, regardless of whether the windows are closed or open. If you would like to report a violation of the Louisiana Smoke-Free Air Acts, contact the Louisiana Tobacco Control Program at:(225) 342-2654 or via email at: Jeremy.Bridges@la.gov
